He held world titles at two weights across a professional career spanning nearly thirty years, and is generally regarded as the finest boxer Africa has produced.
Born in Accra in July 1958, Nelson was an exceptional amateur — 50 wins against 2 defeats — and took featherweight gold at both the All-Africa Games and the Commonwealth Games in 1978.
He turned professional in 1979 and held the WBC featherweight title from 1984 to 1987, then the WBC super-featherweight title twice between 1988 and 1997. He fought on until 2008, finishing with 39 wins from 47 contests, 28 of them by knockout, against 6 losses and 2 draws.
