Tetteh Quarshie is acknowledged as the man who made cocoa cultivation a prosperous industry in the Gold Coast, laying the foundation of the country's twentieth-century economy.
He returned in 1879 with Amelonado cocoa pods and established a farm at Akwapim Mampong in the Eastern Region. Historians note that cocoa had earlier been brought from Brazil by the Basel missionary Reverend Hass, but it was Quarshie's pods that put it into Ghanaian hands.
