He left Microsoft to build a liberal arts university in Accra on the theory that Africa's problem was not skills but leadership. The MacArthur Foundation agreed with him in 2015.
Patrick Awuah Jr., born in 1965, is a Ghanaian engineer, educator and entrepreneur.
He worked as an engineer and programme manager at Microsoft from 1989 to 1997, took an MBA at Berkeley's Haas School in 1999, and founded Ashesi University in Accra in 2002 — a four-year private institution built on a liberal arts core, ethics, and the problems African graduates actually face. He was made a MacArthur Fellow in 2015, and has also received the McNulty Prize, the WISE Prize for Education and membership of the Order of the Volta.
