A timber merchant who founded the United Gold Coast Convention in 1947, paid for it out of his own pocket, and then paid for a young man in America called Kwame Nkrumah to come home and run it.
George Alfred Grant, known universally as Paa Grant, was born on 15 August 1878 and made his money as a timber merchant, becoming one of the wealthiest Africans on the Gold Coast.
In August 1947 he founded the United Gold Coast Convention, financed it, and served as its first president — a movement to draw chiefs and people together and prepare the country for self-government. It was Grant who paid for Kwame Nkrumah's passage back from the United States to take up the post of general secretary. He has been called the father of Gold Coast politics, and the independence movement he bankrolled produced the men who governed the country. He died in 1956, a year before it became Ghana.
