Statecraft & Independence Peerless

Osei Tutu I

1660 – 1717

Founded the Asante Empire, and received the Golden Stool

Peerless is level 1 of 4 in the Ghana Hall of Fame: changed the field itself. Tell the country's story without them and the story breaks. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

With the priest Okomfo Anokye he welded the Asante states into one empire, and the Golden Stool that came down at his feet has held the soul of the nation ever since.

Osei Kofi Tutu I founded the Asante Kingdom with the priest Okomfo Anokye, and was its first Asantehene.

By tradition Okomfo Anokye called down the Sika Dwa Kofi, the Golden Stool, which descended and came to rest at Osei Tutu's feet. From his reign onward the Asante have held that the Stool houses the soul of the nation β€” which is why, two centuries later, a British governor's demand to sit on it provoked the War of the Golden Stool and Yaa Asantewaa's rising.
