Scholar, lawyer and one of the Big Six detained by the colonial authorities in 1948 — and the man who proposed that the Gold Coast be renamed Ghana.
Born in December 1895, Danquah was a scholar and lawyer as much as a politician, and among the six nationalist leaders arrested after the 1948 disturbances whose detention became a turning point in the independence campaign.
He later opposed Nkrumah, was detained under the Preventive Detention Act, and died in detention in February 1965.
