Efua Sutherland

1924 – 1996

Founder of Ghanaian theatre

Landmark is level 2 of 5 in the Ghana Hall of Fame: a first, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

Playwright, teacher and cultural organiser who founded the institutions modern Ghanaian theatre grew out of, and wrote its first enduring plays.

Born in 1924, Efua Sutherland wrote Foriwa (1962), Edufa (1967) and The Marriage of Anansewa (1975), and founded the Ghana Drama Studio, the Ghana Society of Writers, the Ghana Experimental Theatre and the community Kodzidan, or Story House.

As Ghana's earliest playwright-director she shaped what came after her more than any single play could.
