He built paintings out of the grid logic of kente and the colour of Ghanaian buildings, and won the Maria Lassnig Prize shortly before he died.

Atta Kwami was a Ghanaian painter, printmaker, independent art historian and curator, born in September 1956.

His work improvises form and colour drawn from Ghanaian architecture and from strip-woven textiles including Kente, Ewe and Asante cloth. He died in October 2021.
