Free Zones evicts squatters
Briefing the Press in Accra, the acting Deputy Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Board, Obuobia Darko Opoku indicated that the move will allow the board to hand over the land to an investor for development.
“GFZB has found an investor with the requisite capital to develop community 21 into a world class residential area. Drawings and proposed land use plan have been presented by the investor who has already made some financial commitments” Madam Darko Opoku explained.
The area was part of lands compulsorily acquired by the colonial government in 1952.It is recalled that the colonial government in 1956 gave the land to the Tema Development Corporation, but because the TDC had not developed it by 1972, it granted agricultural leases to some farmers.
Upon expiration of the leases which were not renewed in 1996,the government of Ghana then declared the enclave a Free Zones area.
According to Madam Obuobia there had been enough notices to persons occupying the land illegally to vacate; she dismissed the arguments of ill treatment of those whose properties will be affected.
‘’The land had been litigated in court for almost 8 years, however in after winning the court case in 1998,the board is now moving to take full ownership of the land,’’ she added.
She also revealed that management had already lost two investors due to the activities of the encroachers, ‘’management of the board will not sit aloof this time around’’.
‘’We can’t afford to loose this third investor”.
In an interview with Citi News, she said the development will create jobs for artisans like masons, carpenters, painters, wielders, plumbers and other professional in the real estate industry.
The project is expected to begin by February 21st 2014.
