Thanks to a tip-off, police personnel at the Wulensi checkpoint in the Nanumba South District of the Northern Region, have intercepted 21 boxes containing a total of 5,250 cartridges concealed in a cargo truck loaded with bags of cement.
The Northern Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Inspector Ado Amankwa confirmed this to the Times at Wulensi yesterday and said that the driver of the vehicle and one man by name Thomas Waja, who claimed ownership of the ammunition are being held in police custody pending further investigations.
The Nanumba District Police Command had a tip-off that a cargo truck loaded with bags of cement and assorted goods had some ammunition concealed in it and was heading towards the Nanumba area.He said upon that hint, the police mounted a search on all vehicles from Accra entering the area. He said Thomas who claimed ownership of the cartridges told the personnel that he was going to sell them to hunters but during police interrogation, it was revealed that he had no licence to trade in ammunition.
Inspector Amankwa said the two people would soon be put before court for possessing ammunition unlawfully. He commended those who gave the hint and noted that the police could not succeed in their job of policing without the full cooperation of the general public. He gave the assurance that the identity of the informants would be protected. Yesterday’s arrest was the second time this year that the police in the Nanumba district have arrested people with ammunition. It is recalled that in the early part of January, a cargo truck was impounded by the police at Lepusi for transporting arms and cartridges to the district.
